Reiki – More than relaxation

Alternative therapies are gathering momentum in today’s health climate. From chiropractic care to past life healings, our population is realizing that there is more to health than a yearly physical and simply being free from disease. Mental, emotional and spiritual health are proving to be just as important to the overall balance of our human systems, and the practice of Reiki can go a long way towards nurturing the subtler elements of our lives.

Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) involves a channelling of life energy through the practitioner and into the client, either through a ‘laying on of hands’ procedure or by simply hovering the hands over the client’s body. It is based on the theory that all life, all reality, resonates with a common undercurrent of energy. Our experiential (or physical) life is closely linked to this energy. If we struggle with challenges to our physical life, say a car accident or a violent encounter, these physical traumas can resonate right through to the energetic levels, and even though we feel we may have healed, the physical damage (our injuries) may linger in our mental, emotional or even spiritual levels. Conversely, thoughts, feelings, or events that have become lodged in our energies can and will affect our physical reality. This can manifest not only in the form of physical pain or disease, but it can affect social relationships, and the manner in which we perceive and relate to our environment (e.g. our physical reality).

It is based on the theory that all life, all reality, resonates with a common undercurrent of energy.

As an Allied Health Care Professional and science minded individual, Reiki was initially on my radar as a great modality for relaxation and that was about it. After receiving numerous treatments from Reiki Master, Charmaine Kennedy of the Tree of Life North, I realized there was more to this than just an hour of pampering. As blockages in my energies dissolved, I began to understand my body – really understand it, pay better attention to it, work with it when it was energized, lay low when it needed a break, and treat it well when it needed some extra support. I knew that this was a modality of healing that I needed to add to my repertoire, and since receiving my Reiki Level II Attunement, I have gained much more than a new skill or ability. On top of a greater connection and understanding of the challenges experienced by my clients, I have acquired a deeper appreciation and acceptance of everything in my life.

If you are hesitant to work with a Reiki practitioner, know that you can also do Reiki on yourself. It does require modest instruction and the Level I Attunement from a Reiki Master, but you will be amazed by the benefits. If it is physical contact that you are not keen on, remember that a Reiki session can be done with no contact whatsoever, without any decrease in benefit.

Great article! We often forget that stress is the primary factor of almost all health problems. We need stress relief. Good job Jess, I really enjoyed reading this.
